Rupert's inspirational music videos

I like the sheer randomness of this plus the way in complements a random but cheerful song. Both interesting and bizarre.

I like the video for The Road, I like how it always moving and how it compliments the song via the fact he is singing it and also how it mirrors the lyrics within the song.

I like this video by Frightened Rabbit. I think the use of torches in the background works well.

I like this song because the lyrics work well and they are written in way that suggests they have substantial meaning behind them. I think the video also works well due the light and the mise en scene. They have used good camera angles which highlights their skills as musicians.

five music tracks inspiration

i really like the mix of a really good voice and a strong acoustic riff to go with it, the strong bass is really nice as well because it keeps a pulse to the song.

I really like the lyrics to the song, and also how the song is entirely acoustic.

the acoustic part works really well with the voice and lyrics, I also really like the video because its so random.

I really like this song because its different, and the bass part is really strong and defining, also the music video is really unique.

The song is really good because of all the different vocal parts but I really like the music video because its really different.

Rupert preliminary work and evaluation

Planning

For the planning of the project we first created grids and planned what would be needed for each of the two days of filming. This, I feel helped me realise the planning process I will have to complete and use to plan my final piece. This involved planning for Locations, actors, props, and technical kits. We decided that the Tuesday would be filming in our H2 class room and we decided we would film all the teacher shots and to leave the outside shots to Thursday.
On the first day we devised who would be needed and who would be starring. For example we devised who would be Charlie, Matt and James the teacher, and the different extras. We then nominated a camera person and a director who worked closely together to ensure things flowed smoothly. This I feel was important as these two working together allowed the whole programme to run smoothly. This is something I will plan to incorporate in my final piece,
Within the props section of the planning we decided what would be needed in each scene. we watched the video closely and decided on what was needed. For example on the Tuesday it was decided that it was necessary that we have ties and blazers etc. However on Thursday, as well as those we decided that we needed the guitars for outdoor filming. I think this is good preparation for my actual music video and coursework as it highlights the need for continuity within the clip and it will mean that when I come to the process of my final piece, I will be prepared to plan in a detailed fashion.
Next we decided what equipment would be needed. On the Tuesday we decided that we needed a computer to follow the actual video to help ourselves keep up to date and to allow the process to flow smoothly. Secondly, to aid in lip syncing we needed a music player to play the track so as Charlie, Matt and James could lip sync effectively, I played Charlie and therefore planned ahead and learnt the lyrics I would be lip syncing. This was done to help the whole process run well and to maximise time. Something which will be vital come the real thing. We ensured we had a tripod so that the camera was steady and that the filming was good, this is vital as what we created had to be an exact replica of the original video. We made sure we had a working tape. We lastly decided it was necessary for us to turn up dressed to the class to maximise our time use. Which I would say we did efficiently.
We planned the whole process across both the Tuesday and the Thursday and I feel this was important. Possibly the most important element of this preliminary I will carry across to my final piece is that of organisation and the maximum use of time. I learnt, via the process of coming dressed to the classes that efficiency is key to creating a good project.

As well as creating a grid, I also created a storyboard. This was drawings and a description of the clip, what happened, the type of shots used, the lyrics sung, and the lighting of individual clips within the song's video up until the cut off point of 1.14. I can say that I think this is the most important part of the whole video making process. As without this the video cannot be shot as at each section, a detailed description is necessary. With the power of hindsight I can say that the shot angles have to be known and the storyboard is incredibly useful when it comes to editing. As it ensures you know that you know at what point in the videos time line each clip falls.

Production

The production process within our classes video I feel went smoothly and was completed professionally. We did take more than one shot of each scene but I feel this is important. As having finished editing I feel it is important to have a selection of clips to choose from when editing as the just the one clip may not be identical to the one used in the music video. When I come to producing my final video I am going to ensure I have more than one shot of each clip, purely to give me a selection to help aid the later process of editing.
To enable the production practice to run as smoothly as ours did, I feel that it is vital that the director and the camera person have a good relationship as in each clip these to work closely together on a process which is fundamental to the whole video.
Having completed this preliminary I have discovered that organisation will be vital to whatever video I make. As often shooting can overrun time it is important to factor more time in in places where it might be necessary. By doing this, I can ensure that hopefully at no point will my project be pushed for time on certain aspects and therefore produce shots to a lower standard than what they could be. This use of time will be something I will encorporate into my final product.

Editing

After completing the editing for my preliminary work I can say that the process relies heavily on observations that have been made at early times such as the storyboard. Having a detailed storyboard and shot sequence enables different shots to be put in the correct order. It allows the length of each clip to be recorded which makes cutting each recorded clip much easier and thus allows the sequence of shots to fit the music and therefore the lip syncing to match the lyrics.
From the beginning of the process of editing my preliminary to the complete stage that it is at now I feel I have learned a lot about editing. The software we used was imovie on Apple Macs. Prior until this point I had no real experience of using Macs and certainly no experience with editing. I now feel I have good capabilities on the Macs and I understand how to edit. I feel this will stand me in good stead for when I come to editing my own video. I feel this experience will enable me to edit to my best capabilities and therefore achieve the results I want from my own music video.

This process of a preliminary video has taught me techniques I feel I will come to rely on when I do my final piece, such as a good capability to edit and a thorough understanding of how to storyboard and organise I feel that via this process I have put myself in a good position for my final piece of work.

Planning

Before we even started to thin about filming the task we first had to plan every detail of the film, we had to create a shot by shout story board of the first 1.14 seconds of the busted ‘what I got o school for’ clip. The details we had to include on this plan were what type of camera shot it was e.g. close up, other details were how long each shot lasted and a drawing of what was in the actual shot, followed by if there were any lyrics during the shot. I found this process really helpful because it allowed me to have a complete guide to which shots I needed and all the details I would need when it came to editing.
Once this process was complete we moved on to deciding who would play what roles in the actual music video, we were assigned roles but it was up to the person playing the role to get the clothes that would work for there character when the filming began.
So in the Tuesday we used grids to plan what was needed for both of the filming days, it was decided to make things easier that all the inside shots of the film would be shot on the Tuesday, this also involved shooting all the teacher shots because some of the cast would not be there on the Thursday so we had to plan around that, all the outside shots would then be shot on the Thursday so the heavier props like the guitars and the boom box would only be needed to be brought in for one day. This planning helped a lot because it meant that we could work our way round cast absences and also make the whole filming process a lot more efficient.
Tuesday’s filming went pretty well because of the plans we had made everyone was sure of what shots we were doing that day and also what we would need to wear on the day. The class decided that coming partially dressed in the school clothes would allow people to class get quicker for the lessons filming, giving us more time to do more.
The shots were done efficiently and well but the placement of the camera could have a bit better planned as lots of time was wasted working out were to set up the camera.
Lip-syncing didn’t prove too much of a problem because we had a boom box playing the music when we needed to film a singing shot so the syncing would fit perfectly when it came to editing.
When it came down to bringing all the planning together for the filming I found that the more detailed your storyboard was the easier it was to film all the shots exactly how you wanted them, it also allowed you to have more concise shots that fitted together better in the editing process.

Filming/Production.

One of the main things I learned when doing the filming was you needed to keep the continuity really tight, because after we filmed all the shots we later realised that a vital shot that involved a pencil later changed into a pen when the teacher picked it up, this makes the shot look not very professional and didn’t match the shots in the actual music video. Another thing I found was that just one take of a shot wouldn’t do, because when it came to editing I found that the solitary shot that had been filmed wasn’t right or long enough, I felt that filming the shot more that once would allow you to have a wider selection when it came to editing.
I also thought that more planning could have been put into wear the camera would be set up, we had planned the shots, what would be in the shots, but not were the camera was going to go, this wasted time and made us have to rush some of the end shots so we could finish on time.
Appointing one director and one cameraman would also be another thing I have learned from the preliminary task, as when the filming started debates between multiple directors and cameramen slowed down the whole project, also creating confusion when the shot was taken as other camera men and directors wouldn’t be happy with it.
I have learned that when it comes to the real task I will have a intricate shot and camera position plan, also appointing one director who knows exactly what he is doing will help the project immensely.

Editing
I found the editing was a lot easier with a clear storyboard and a large amount of shots that could be used in the process, I also found that when the storyboard was done all the length of the shots were not exactly seconds longs, some were half a second long and other not whole values so much cutting down clips had to be done so the lip syncing would work in the clip. I found the editing quite easy because I use video editing software quite a lot and own an Imac myself, the main problems encountered were the video we had wasn’t perfect and for some shots we had to make do with not very well shot clips, this affected the overall quality of the clip once the editing had been done.

I have learned overall that a clear concise plan is needed for good filming and editing, also a clear plan for both the cameraman and the director so there is no confusion between the two. Were the camera goes needs to be planned better, and close attention to props is needed to keep the level of continuity high, I think if all these skills are implemented my video task in a2 will be a lot easier.
