Analysis of Magazine Adverts

I decided to analyse adverts from NME as I feel that this would be the magazine most likely to advertise our album as it is the magazine that most frequently releases information on our chosen genre which is Indie Alternative.

This advert for Sea Sick Steve uses images in a that is effective as it relates to him and his personality surrounding his music. It is a simplistic image which includes his guitar, something that he is famous for and his face singing. Although it might sound strange the fact that it image has included his beard is both relevant and important. It is important and relevant because his beard is an iconic symbol of him, as it relates back to his hobo/trampish back story. The image itself is in black and white which gives it an authentic and simple look again relating back to his simpler and easier days. The last part of the image is the banner which is effective as it announces who he is. This could be something I include; to make sure the band are advertised properly in the magazine. I'm not so keen on the use of black and white as I don't think it would be hugely relevant to my band. I think the advert would look more effective in a colour relevant to the type of music they play.

The layout of this image is simple; much like the image which is included. The layout places the image at the top of the advert; I feel this makes it most and advertises to the max. The layout of the writing is important as the places he is the playing, the most important part of the advert are in the largest writing thus making them stand out on the advert. Each of the lines are separated by a break which I think is important as this makes it easy to read and it just absorbable when it is looked. Not much reading has to take place.
From this I can see that it is important to make the images and the event dates the most obvious things on the page.

The colour scheme of the advert is vey simple, keeping in theme with all over aspects of the advert. The yellow on the background is effective at drawing attention to the advert. The red colour is used on all things that relate to the artist being advertised. For example the writing about tour venues, the name of the artist and his most recent album which is for sale are all in the same colour, red. Black can be used as a colour on this background as it stands out easily from the bright yellow background. I like this use of a simplistic colour scheme. The colours chosen work well together whilst at the same time clashing enough to make the important parts of the advert stand out. I feel that is something I should keep in mind whilst creating mock ups and the real thing.

The type of shot used is a close up of Sea Sick Steve's face. It is a close up which has been modified to make it look like a drawing which gives it an authentic and real feel. The close up is particularly close on his face and guitar, as these are the main things he is known for and therefore in an advertisement these are things that should be show.
For my magazine advert I would not edit a picture so that it looks like a drawing as I feel this is something that is most effective when used alongside a solo artist, such as Ed Sheeran or Sea Sick Steve. For my Advertisement; to ensure the whole band is in shot I feel I would have to use at least a mid shot or perhaps a long shot.

The typography of the information being given to us is of one that I would describe as normal or standard. I feel that this has been done so that it is easy to read and therefore allegeable. Some fonts are hard to read and therefore a plain font can be effective for advertising. This is something I will bare in mind. Perhaps I need not use such a plain font; however the one I use should certainly be readable.

Overall I would say it is an effective piece of advertisement, however it is not one I am immensely keen on. Purely because of the colour scheme and the use of image. Whilst it may be effective; it is not to my taste. I will change this on my own and have each section and aspect of the magazine advertisement relevant to my own genre and band.
