Analysis of Magazine Adverts

I have decided to analyse this old advert of Jack Penate as I am a fan of his music and I found it intriguing. I can see that the image he has used for the advert is not relatable to is music in any way. However it it relatable to his genre of music which is very soft, electric pop. This type of image is what I would expect to see from a band or an artist in this genre and I expect it is effective at targeting his target audience. I can see that my image does not have to be directly relatable to the music as long as it is directly relatable to the genre of music. However, in my opinion, it is wise to ensure that the image is relatable to the music to ensure the as effective advertising as possible. I will ensure that my image is obviously linked to the type of music that The Almost Fallen play.

The layout is also intriguing. There is not much space left on the advert with the large about of images covering it. I would say that 90% of the advert is image and in my eyes, not images which are of an obvious nature. I feel the extreme close up of the pinnacle in the centre, has drawn attention away from the Artists name and his new single. This I feel is not effective advertising and therefore will be something I try to avoid. I can see that an image of the band is key to advertising within a magazine; as at least those who do not know the name may be able to recognise them via their image. I will therefore use an image of the band and the name of the album together; to ensure clarity and effective advertising.

The colour scheme is also something I would disagree with upon this piece of advertising. Whilst it may be iconic of the specific genre, I still feel that it is a poorly picked colour scheme. The reason I feel this is because the writing "Have I been a Fool?" is in what I feel is a rather disgusting colour, whilst it also is hard to distinguish it from the background. I feel that A brash colour should be used which looks nice but at the same time stands out from the background of the advert and therefore draws attention. To me, this advert does not and I will therefore try and avoid following this path. I feel I will use a brash colour; one which looks nice and is stark against a background; therefore catching eyes like an advertisement should.

The type of shot used is an extreme close up of a cartoon image. I feel this is not wise as Jack Penate is not a particularly large solo artist and not in a position to not frame his own image in the picture. He seems to have broken solo artist convention on framing themselves within the image to ensure widespread publicity. As I have mention, I will not use a close up but rather shot which can fit all three of us in the band in the frame.

The typography I feel is also poor as I think it does not stand out far enough from the background. In his situation I would have used a large, bold font to make sure it is eye catching and obvious. This is something I will ensure on my advert as I can use a bold font and keep it fitting with the genre of music The Almost Fallen are associated with.

I would class the effectiveness of this advert therefore poor and something which I would avoid copying. I feel that adverts should stand out and I will make sure that mine does.
