Mock up CD covers

To get a real feel for what I want from digipack, I decided to start with the very basics and design CD covers to my liking and to see what effects can be made and whether or not I think they are suitable.

This is the first mock up I have created for a CD cover and I am proud of what has been done and what it can show. Although I do not like it as much as some of the others I have made, I feel it goes a long way to sum up what I want to see from my CD cover and digipack.

Starting with the colour; I like the simplicity and how the whole design is easy to read due to its simple nature. This is something I would say has been carried through on to all my mock ups as I feelit is the most effect technique. The actually choice of colour is questionable. I have taken a lot of inspiration for this cover from the Jack Johnson In between dreams album cover as it is one of my favourites. However the colour is not the same as the one on that cover and therefore I feel it is a little questionable. I feel it is good to have a colour that is bright and bold and clash, however I feel it must clash in a positive way. In my head; this colour yellow does not clash well and looks a little ugly.
In similar fashion; the red writing was something I saw on The Kooks' album Inside Inside out and I thought it stood out well and there could be no mistaking the name of the album. I directly copied this colour and it looks nice just I feel that it does not go with the yellow. Again reaffirming the idea that it isn't the colour to use.

The image I have used is a googled one; just for the sake of practice. It is of the band The Killers and I feel a lot of our inspiration for The Almost Fallen came from them; therefore they would be a reasonable copy to use. However, The Almost Fallen consists of three members so the image will be of a different number, however the effects used apply in the same way. I liked the silhouette technique, again something taken for Jack Johnson's In Between dreams album cover; I think it adds dynamism and power to the colour and therefore is suitable for the genre of our band; which plays very powerful music. One on the main things I like about this mock up is the lead singers face standing out. I think this was a good touch because often; the lead singer is most known of all the band members. Therefore, having him stick out not only adds an artistic effect but also helps advertise.
The thorns around the edge were something added more as an after thought as I was worried that the album cover thus far was not in sync with the genre of music we chose for our band to play. I was concerned that the yellow colour; slightly softer than one would expect for a band of our ones nature, would not be attractive to the target audience. Whilst at the time I thought it would work; I kept it and added the thorns to create a slightly darker, negative side to the cover.

The font on top used for The Almost Fallen was chosen with care. I don't think it would be a font I would carry through to my final piece, purely because it doesn't strike me as being powerful enough. It is a font I would expect to see on a more Indie cover. On the other hand however it does fit the thorns quite will and I feel it goes with the overall, more artistic silhouette idea. It is a slight more retro look; looking more hand written than typed which is something I like. I feel that unless the surrounding cover was fitting to it, like it is above, I would avoid using this font.
The font used for the album name was one that I found on the website DaFonts.com. I liked it; I feel it dissimilar to fonts used by bands such as Franz Ferdinand and I like how the position makes it almost look like the lead singer is saying it.

Whilst the photoshopping could use a touch of better care, I still feel that this album cover is not a bad first attempt. I can see that the thorns frame the work well and therefore on my final project I should keep framing in mind and that I must consider colour to more careful extent.
