The image used here works well to create and capture a specific mood. The same mood it creates is also the one that runs through the music on the album, thus there is a direct link between the album cover and the music. This is something I have picked up on on all the album covers I have analysed. The image itself is clever and artistic. Just like the majority of Jack Johnson previous album covers and there is a definite theme that funs throughout them. This is effective as advertising and is perhaps something I should look to have running throughout a number of the mock ups I create. The image is also a highlight, an outline of the solo artist, it is a soft image due to the one colour and the fact it is just an outline. Once again this mirrors the music he has written for the album, and his specific genre.
From this, and the previous album covers, I can see that the most important thing I can include is a direct link from the album cover to the style of music on the album.
The layout of the album cover is effective. The picture of the artist is seemingly being framed by that of the shrubbery, which again is a soft colour. The picture is positioned and styled so that emphasis can be directed towards the name. As he is a solo artist this is particularly important, and advertising must be a key feature of an album cover. The name of the artist and the album has been positioned so that it sits on the darkest part of the album and thus stands out as much as possible.
This will be something that I take from this album cover. It is important to have a clear name, to have it either standing out against a busy background (such as the B.O.B cover) or stranded in the middle of emptiness (The pigeon Detectives) the name must be obvious. Secondly, I will; try to centralise of create an even cover via the positioning of the image, this would appear to be key.
There is an obvious and specific colour scheme to this album cover, one of made up of blues and blacks. This is effective in creating a soft background and mirroring his music and genre and thus appealing to his target audience effectively.
I can see that I should use colours that will advertise to my target audience or in some way, relate to the music on the album.
Like on previous album covers, the type of shot is a mid shot, again I would this is because Jack Johnson is a solo artist, he will have been trying to praise awareness of himself by having an obvious shot.
The Mise en scene of the album is perhaps the most effective part of it. It targets the target audience and advertises who he is. The first part of it which does this is that of the guitar. This prop is the most important thing to people, and a possible audience recognising him; especially considering how he has made himself less obvious via his chosen colour scheme. The second part of this which is effective is the location. Jack Johnson is known for being chilled and a guitar player and surfer. Thus having the sea positioned in a way that is obvious is again making it obvious who he is.
From this I can see that it is important to make sure that included within the Mise en Scene of the album cover are things which will be easy to associate with the band and the genre within which their music is conducted.
